國際貿易專業，又被稱為「國貿路」。近幾年來，國際貿易專業一直熱度不減，畢業生也越來越多。於是有人開始疑惑：國貿人才市場是不是要飽和了?事實上，據專家分析，我國作為全球第三大出口國，急需大量國貿人才，目前每年國貿人才的缺口都接近60萬。所以，國際貿易專業不僅僅是條「商業街」，而且還是一條繁華喧鬧、容量巨大、還在持續招商中的「商業街」。
國貿有兩只手——英語和經貿，缺一不可。盡管英語專業有經貿英語方向，但想從事外貿工作的英語專業畢業生如果要考研，最好還是首選國際貿易，因為該專業更加符合用人單位的需求，就業前景非常好。以中國人民大學和復旦大學為例，2004級國貿專業碩士生一次就業率達90%以上，就業去向包括會計事務所、證券期貨公司、外貿公司等等，其中不乏平安保險公司、中國家用電器進出口公司以及四大國際著名會計事務所等大型企業。
跨專業考研的優勢：
從專業特點看，國貿作為專為國際投資和國際貿易培養人才而設置的專業，對畢業生的外語水平要求很高。在瞬息萬變的國際經濟貿易領域，無論是商務談判、合同簽訂還是貿易的具體實施，准確地與外商進行交流成了最重要的前提。所以，出色的外語水平是國貿人才必備的素質;
從考研內容看，各校尤其是名校該專業公共課英語的分數線都比其他專業高，如北京大學、對外經貿大學等高校近年來的英語線均為60分，英語成績成為考試成敗的關鍵因素之一，因此英語專業本科生考研占很大優勢。國際貿易專業課考試中的專業英語為3篇文章翻譯，共50分，難度較大，歷年得分過半者不多，很容易拉開檔次;在復試時，要求英語聽力口語佔50 %以上比重。可見，在聽說讀寫上游刃有餘的英語專業學生，跨專業考國貿專業優勢更為明顯。
跨專業考研的劣勢：
英語專業考生在考數學的時候可能會不佔優勢。數學是極易拉開分差的科目，是否能將數學這條天塹變成通途是決定考研成敗的關鍵。不過國貿專業一般考數四，有些學校考數三(如2005年清華大學)，難度相對較大。因此考生報名前必須仔細閱讀各校的考試要求。另外，由於沒有系統地學習過經濟理論方面的知識，對於宏觀、微觀經濟學等專業課，英語專業的學生也會覺得發怵，這些專業課千萬不可小覷。
