金融學（Finance）的定義不是一個簡單的問題，而且用來定義學科的術語對該學科的發展方向會有極其重要的影響。Webster字典將「To Finance」定義為「籌集或提供資本（To Raise Or Provide Funds Or Capital For）」。華爾街日報在其新開的公司金融（Corporate Finance）的固定版面中將（公司）金融定義為「為業務提供融資的業務（Business Of Financing Businesses）」，這一定義基本上代表了金融實業界的看法。代表學界對金融學較有權威的解釋可參照《新帕爾格雷夫貨幣金融大辭典》(The New Palgrave Dictionary Of Money And Finance) 的「Finance」相關詞條。由斯蒂芬•A•羅斯（Stephen A. Ross）撰寫的「Finance」詞條稱「金融以其不同的中心點和方法論而成為經濟學的一個分支，其中心點是資本市場的運營、資本資產的供給和定價。其方法論是使用相近的替代物給金融契約和工具定價。」羅斯概括了「Finance」的四大課題：「有效率的市場」、「收益和風險」、「期權定價理論」和「公司金融」。羅斯的觀點，集中體現了西方學者界定「Finance」倚重微觀內涵及資本市場的特質。

在中國學界，對「Finance」一詞的翻譯及內涵界定存在較大爭議。總覽50多年來國內出版的各類財經專業辭典，「Finance」一詞的漢語對譯主要有「金融」、「財政」、「財務」、「融資」四種。相對而言，後三種譯法用途相對特定，唯有「金融」頗值商榷。「金融」就其理論內涵來說，在中國具有轉軌經濟背景下的典型特徵。基於貨幣、信用、銀行、貨幣供求、貨幣政策、國際收支、匯率等專題的傳統式金融研究，對於「金融」一詞的代表性定義為「貨幣流通和信用活動以及與之相聯系的經濟活動的總稱」(劉鴻儒，1995)，並不突出反映資本市場的地位。一般而言，國內學界理解「金融學（Finance）」，主要以「貨幣銀行學(Money And Banking)」和「國際金融(International Finance)」兩大代表性科目為主線。其原因大致有二：在視資本、證券為異類的歷史環境下，由政府主導的銀行業間接融資是金融實踐的中心內容。與此相適應，針對銀行體系的貨幣金融研究成為金融學絕對主導。二是發端於20世紀80年代初的改革開放國策導致將對外貿易加強，國內高校相應大面積開設以國際收支和貿易為核心的「國際金融」 (International Finance)專業。
基於以上兩大學科界定的（國內）「金融學」，卻恰恰不是Finance的核心內容。西方學界對Finance的理解，集中反映在兩門課程：一是以公司財務、公司融資、公司治理為核心內容的Corporate Finance，即公司金融。二是以資產定價(Asset Pricing)為核心內容的Investments，即投資學。值得一提的是，國內很多學者將Corporate Finance譯作「公司財務」或「公司理財」，很容易使人誤解其研究對象為會計事項，今後應予修正。總體觀之，國內所理解的「金融學」，大抵屬於西方學界宏觀經濟學、貨幣經濟學和國際經濟學領域的研究內容。而西方學界所指的Finance，就其核心研究對象而言更側重微觀金融領域。
