而MSF課程的設置形式主要為培養金融專業人才，主要的專業方向包括金融分析、投資管理以及公司財務等。典型的核心課程包括投資分析、公司財務以及財務管理或管理會計。其基礎學科包括經濟學、會計學、計量法(貨幣的時間價值與統計學概論)。主要的研究領域包括：證券管理、金融模型建構、兼並與並購以及實務期權等。盡管有一些非數量分析的選修課程，如公司治理、商業倫理以及商業戰略等，但基本上MSF主要課程以數量學方面為主。
MFE也就是Master in Financial Engineering，我們中國學生常常稱之為金融工程。 這個專業對申請者的數學和計算機背景有較高的要求，所以許多同學認為MFE是金融裡面偏理科的學位，而MSF是金融裡面偏文科的學位。可能是因為我們國家的教育一向就是以培養理工科人才為重，所以同學們會認為MFE的技術含量比較高，含金量自然也比MSF高。因此，不少有志向的同學認為自己應該做一些「更有技術含量」的工作，便把自己的專業方向定在了MFE。MFE在美國也叫數量金融、金融數學等，是金融碩士中專業性最強的一種項目。金融工程廣泛使用模型，用數學方法分析股票走勢、收益率曲線，分析各種債券等的定價規律、作用以及應用策略。可以說，金融工程是金融學與數學，計算科學，計算機科學交叉滲透形成的學科。金融工程的理論性與抽象性是比較強的，它廣泛應用數學、物理和工程學方法，用數理語言代替日常語言來闡述金融思想。因此，金融工程學對數學和計算機編程的要求是非常高的。
