MFE也就是Master in Financial Engineering，我们中国学生常常称之为金融工程。 这个专业对申请者的数学和计算机背景有较高的要求，所以许多同学认为MFE是金融里面偏理科的学位，而MSF是金融里面偏文科的学位。可能是因为我们国家的教育一向就是以培养理工科人才为重，所以同学们会认为MFE的技术含量比较高，含金量自然也比MSF高。因此，不少有志向的同学认为自己应该做一些“更有技术含量”的工作，便把自己的专业方向定在了MFE。MFE在美国也叫数量金融、金融数学等，是金融硕士中专业性最强的一种项目。金融工程广泛使用模型，用数学方法分析股票走势、收益率曲线，分析各种债券等的定价规律、作用以及应用策略。可以说，金融工程是金融学与数学，计算科学，计算机科学交叉渗透形成的学科。金融工程的理论性与抽象性是比较强的，它广泛应用数学、物理和工程学方法，用数理语言代替日常语言来阐述金融思想。因此，金融工程学对数学和计算机编程的要求是非常高的。
